Established by the Ely’s daughter, Judy Kelly of Montrose, this fund will support local charities as recommended annually by the Larry and Judy Kelly family of Montrose.

The couple met while teaching at Newton Ransom High School. Cecilia Carroll married Lt. Glenn W. Ely soon after WWII. They moved to South Montrose in 1950. They later made their home at 40 Jackson St. in Montrose where they remained until retirement. They are the parents of Judith Ely Kelly, Glenn Patrick, Richard James, and Ellen Marie Ely. Their six grandchildren are Carroll Kelly, Lauren Kelly Goff, Esq., Eileen Kelly Keefe, Esq. Teresa and Glenn Brian Ely, Ryan and Hannah Mae Ely.

Glenn Winfield Ely was born in Brooklyn, Pa. the son of the late Glenn W. and Mabel (Bookstaver) Ely. He was an agricultural nutritionist and founder and president of Nu-Feeds Corp. He did research work in nutrition in France and England as well as for Penn State University and Cornell University. He was the author of several articles published in Agricultural Journals. Mr. Ely was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church. He served as a member and President of the Montrose Area School District Board of Education; as president of the Montrose Athletic Association, as chairman of the Northern Tier Railroad Task Force Committee and as Trustee of the Montrose United Methodist Church. He was a director of the Eastern Federation of Feed Merchants, past chairman of the Ruminant Animal Health Association, and a member of the Penn Agricultural Business Association of the Northeastern States. He was honored with a lifetime membership to the National Dairy Shrine Club.

Mr. Ely was a graduate of Penn. State University and a member of Alpha Gamma Rho and Alpha Tau Alpha Fraternities. After teaching for a brief period he worked on the Extension Faculty at Penn State University. During WWII, he served as a Captain in the Engineer Corps of the U.S. Army. He was a president of the Montrose Rotary Club and had been a member of the Youth Exchange, Group Study Exchange and Rotary Leaders Camp Committee. He served as District Governor of District 741 of the Rotary International in 1976 and 1977, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an avid golfer.

Glenn died Monday evening, December 12, 1988, at Montrose General Hospital from a sudden heart attack suffered at the end of the weekly Rotary Club meeting.

Cecilia Mary Carroll Ely was born in Scranton, Pa., daughter of the late Patrick A. Carroll and Lillian (McDonough) Carroll. She was an honor graduate of Holy Rosary High School, Scranton, Pa. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Marywood College, she pursued graduate studies at Penn State University. She taught school at Newton-Ransom High School from 1942 through 1947. She was a homemaker and full time wife and mother for 15 years. For 18 years, she taught English and Latin and served as the language department head and yearbook advisor at the Montrose Area High School.

She was very active in various civic and church groups and served as president and show chairperson of the Montrose Garden Club. A member of the Holy Name of Mary Alter and Rosary Society, she administered the annual picnic fund. She was a past president of Y-Gradale and the Montrose Civic League. She was a member of the Montrose Country Club and the ladies golf league. She was a long time supporter of Rotary International. She was made a Paul Harris Fellow in April, 1988, and an Honorary Member of the Montrose Rotary Club in May of 1989.

In her post-retirement years in Vero Beach, Florida she was active in the Vista Royal Owners Association and Country Club, the Dodger Pines Country Club, the Indian River County Republican Party and St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church of Vero Beach.
