Montrose Area Kiwanis Club Community Service Fund

About the fund

Established by the Montrose Area Kiwanis Club to provide support for the club’s community and education assistance projects.

From the Donor:

KIWANIS CLUB OF MONTROSE AREA

The focus at the heart of every Kiwanis Club is changing the world by service to others, especially children.  In support of this mission, the Kiwanis Club of Montrose Area has established an annual Community Service Award dedicated to encourage young adults to become involved in helping those in need.  A cash award will be presented to two senior students at both the Elk Lake School District and Montrose Area School District who have exemplified the values and spirit of unselfish regard for the benefit and welfare of others.

The recipients will have demonstrated leadership and personal initiative in their school and their community by:

  • Participating in extracurricular activities
  • Offering service and commitment to their community
  • Assisting others in need, showing acts of kindness and providing a positive role model by example.

More information about the scholarship, requirements, and how to apply can be obtained at the ELHS or MASD guidance offices.

On March 20, 2015, the Kiwanis Club of Montrose Area entered into an agreement with The Community Foundation of The Endless Mountains to establish The Montrose Area Kiwanis Club Community Service Fund.

The purpose of the Fund is to finance Kiwanis community service projects with income earned by investing money the club has in excess of its operating and community service commitments.  Specifically and foremost, to provide monies for the Community Service Awards presented annually at both Elk Lake and Montrose School Districts.  The Fund was initially financed with a balance of $24,000.  This amount was obtained from the balance of the funds in the Kiwanis Club Scholarship bank account and transfer of funds from the Kiwanis club savings bank account.

After many years of administering this project on their own, on March 20, 2015, the Kiwanis Club of Montrose Area entered into an agreement with The Community Foundation of The Endless Mountains to establish The Montrose Area Kiwanis Club Community Service Fund.

Historically, the Kiwanis Club of Montrose Area, in its effort to promote community service through the actions of high school students, established Sponsored Youth Groups known as Key Clubs in both Elk Lake and Montrose High Schools.  This endeavor was very successful and resulted in many young adult students becoming involved in promoting service to others, especially those in need.  As a result, The Montrose Kiwanis Club wanted to recognize those students who went above and beyond to provide the leadership and initiative required to complete and obtain the benefits from the service activities in which they participated.

In 2000, the Kiwanis Club established a Community Service Scholarship.  The ‘Scholarship’ was a cash award for the student to use as they wanted.  The initial recipients of the awards were those students who were chosen by the Key Club Advisor at each school.
